Why should vets blood type before ordering blood?
Due to the uneven distribution of DEA 1 negative and DEA 1 positive dogs in the population, DEA 1 negative blood is harder to come by. This paucity is further compounded by the fact that Negative blood can be given to Positive dogs (a common occurrence when blood typing was not or cannot be done). For this reason we request clinics to always blood type in order to maximize the use of our Negative blood stock. Having a healthy reserve of Negative blood is also extremely beneficial for emergency situations.
It is always best to type and cross match for ANY transfusion. However, for the second and any other transfusion beyond the first, it is mandatory. Alloantibodies to other red cell antigens in dogs are created after 4-7 days post the initial transfusion.
Cats are born with antibodies to other red cell groups and should be cross matched and typed from the first transfusion.
Should vets refer dogs to become potential donors?
Yes absolutely. We are always on the look out for potential donors to maintain a good supply of all blood products. Feel free to send them our way. Not all dogs will become donors but if you feel one of your patients would make a good donor please let them know.
